In Night Runner (which will be a series) by Max Turner, 15-year-old orphan Zach lives in a metal ward because of his weird, incurable allergies. He's allergic to food, (except for milkshakes) and sunlight, - the things that most people aren't allergic to. He doesn't mind, though- the ward has an awesome room where he can work out, his best friend visits him all the time, and the pretty Nurse Ophelia is practically his mother. Then, one day, a man on a police motorcycle crash-visits the ward and tells Zach to run! So begins Zach's adventure- when he begins to learn his true identity, meets a strange family member he'd never known of, and hides out at his friend Charlie's house. Everything eventually becomes clear for Zach- he isn't an average boy with weird allergies- he's a vampire- super strong, super fast, and with abilities he'd never began to imagine that he could have. It's cool and horrifying at the same time- he is far more powerful than any human, and only beginning to know his strengths, but he needs blood to survive- and it turns out that human blood is far more beneficial than the animal blood that was in his 'strawberry milkshakes.' Zach needs to satisfy his hunger, hide from the police, who are looking for the 'missing insane boy,' and learn more about his parents and his mysterious past, while discovering that what might be the most evil vampire on the face of the earth might be after him... This book is narrated by Zach and is an exciting adventure mixed with mystery, with a bit of thrill and horror. Don't shy away from this book, especially boys, because you're thinking it's another Twilight- the only thing this has in common with Twilight is the vampires! Along the way, Zach meets Luna- a girl that is the best (and only) girl his age he has ever met, and Zach wonders how he's going to be able to tell Luna what he really is- it was easy to tell Charlie, but how can he tell someone he barely knows? This book includes one part when a bunch of teenagers are at a party with alcoholic beverages served, but Zach and Luna don't drink any, and nothing bad happens there. I must warn you- towards the end, there is a horrifying tragedy that will make you furious with the author- but don't throw your book in the garbage yet! I promise that if you read the rest of the book, you won't be disappointed! Night Runner is an original book that draws you in from the first page, and will leave you waiting for the next book, and shaking from the evil trickiness of the author!Ages: 12-16
